After years spent playing supporting roles, Brigitte Kali Canales is beginning to see her true potential as an actress. In 2010, her breakthrough came when she landed an episode of A&E police procedural series “The Glades.” Additionally, she’s had several small roles and lead turns in other films and TV shows, such as Anna Faris’ crime thriller film “Thumper”, co-starring Allison Janney.

Canales currently stars as one of the lead characters in Netflix horror film The Old Ways, which premiered earlier this year and has since made waves online. The story centers around a journalist traveling back to Veracruz, Mexico to study its tribal cultures and witchcraft before falling victim to kidnappers who claim she’s demonically possessed.

Christopher Alender’s feature film combines demonic possession and visceral body horror in an alarming combination, elevated by Canales’ powerful performance as a journalist initially resistant to her captors’ beliefs but ultimately accepting them and softening up over time. Andrea Cortes as Miranda shows both family bonds as well as power abuse from outside forces; Julia Vera and Sal Lopez complete an outstanding cast.
