The Old Ways is an unnerving blend of demonology and visceral body horror that’s highlighted by Brigitte Kali Canales’ stellar work as its principal star. Though its script does suffer, her lead performance keeps you invested in her survival – particularly during an ethereal summoning to an unwise realm, or her encounter with Demon Boy (Julian Lerma), who attempts to violently absorb her soul. Overall, director Christopher Alender’s sophomore feature makes a welcome contribution to this fast-evolving subgenre of exorcism films.
