Anal Glands
Anal glands are fluid-filled sacs located either side of the anus (imagine two clock faces with 4 and 8 o’clock positions), which secrete an oily brown substance used for scent marking in nature. When these glands become full they may cause significant pain and irritation for your dog and could prompt him to chew his butt or move his rear end across the floor or lawn in attempts to ease his irritation.
If your dog displays any of these symptoms, speak to their veterinarian immediately about expressing the glands manually. It’s an easy and quick procedure that may provide much-needed relief from anal gland impaction.
Surgical lubricants like KY Jelly, Wet or Astro-Glide can be purchased at most medical and veterinary supply outlets. Be sure to wear gloves during the process and clean yourself afterward to prevent odors; additionally use a fresh towel or cloth in case there’s leakage – this job should only be attempted by experienced vet professionals.
