One impressive aspect of the film is that it never crosses over into wanton torture porn territory. Canales’ powerful performance animates every interaction between Cristina and her unholy presence within is fully motivating and humanity-infused, especially during multiple ritualized exorcisms. She makes you care deeply for Cristina even as she must revisit painful memories in order to exorcise this evil presence within. Eventually, you find yourself rooting for Cristina as she revisits past pain to exorcise this devil who holds so tightly to her soul.
